PART 3: Heavy Metal

Activity from Offutt’s 55th Wing’s (OF) detachment were 14849 RC-135U ‘Combat Sent’ (P18) (in April this aircraft was subjected to a reckless intercept by a Russian SU-27 while on a routine mission in international airspace over the Sea of Okhotsk-BBC report), 14845 RC-135W ‘Rivet Joint’ (P19), and 24128 RC-135S ‘Cobra Ball’ (P20/P21), (P22 black starboard wing and engine cowls visible).  Additional sortie was 23582 WC-135C ‘Constant Phoenix’ (P23), which has been active ready to monitor (reportedly imminent) North Korea nuclear test. Base 733rd Air Mobility Sqn were busy on the south transit ramps handling a UPS B747, a Kallita B747, and an Atlas Air B763 (P11). In addition a Texas AFRC C-5 (P12), Travis 60th AMW KC-10 Extender (P13) and C-17, plus a pair of KC-135R’s (P14) from the 203ARS Hawaiian ANG (HH) both of which undertook sorties, mixed it up on the ramps with a USAF C-20, 27th SOW 524th SOS C146A 23085 (P15), Army UC-35 70103 and a C-40 Clipper 165834.

A detachment of F-15’s from the 18th OG/WG were away on exercise, however the resident 909ARS KC-135R’s were busy supporting the daily 44th FS F-15 rotations (P16). Note Captains lazy arm out of a KC-135 cockpit window (P17)

PART 1: USN and USMC

VP-16 (LF) is operating six P-8A Poseidon’s (168429’430’433’435’438’439) five of which were involved in the search for MH370 with examples being rotated to the Perth Airport WA. Lined up on the north ramp (P2) with one or two examples daily circuit bashing on RW23R (P3).

Three KC-130J’s from VMGR-152 (QD) at nearby MCAS Futenma were noted with brief stopovers (P8), plus visiting 164597 KC-130T-30 from VMGR452 (NY) StewartNew York
